For 5,000 years the wheel has been the go-to design for most types of transportation. In fact, no one considered there could be a better design. The circular wheel was always considered the final design with no room for improvement.

Not only did David create a shape that was drastically different, but he discovered the shape possessed inherent advantages compared to a traditional wheel. His search to improve the wheel was an uphill battle against industries that were not used to change. He needed to prove his idea was not only different, but revolutionary.

Shark Wheel, now based in Orange County, California, is the fulfillment of all the hard work done by the entire Shark Wheel team. Shark Wheel now creates a full line of WORLD CLASS products for the action sports, materials handling and other industries based on David’s discovery.

Rather than a traditional circular shape, the Shark Wheel is a hybrid of a sphere and cube taking on the properties of both shapes while in motion. It has been touted as the reinvention of the wheel by various news outlets. The wheels were initially funded by a Kickstarter campaign that reached nearly eight times its initial goal. It attracted the attention of award-winning skateboarders and has won various competitions around the world. Shark Wheel also appeared on ABC's Shark Tank in May 2015 as the season finale.

The shape of Shark Wheels came to David Patrick while he was working on an unrelated scientific pursuit. The shape of the Shark Wheel was known to be a perfect cube, but when the Shark Wheel shape was accidentally dropped, it rolled. Perfectly. The wheels appear to be square, but roll smoothly like conventional wheels. Its single or multiple interlocking rings are based on sine wave patterns, which create a thinner contact patch with the pavement compared to a conventional wheel of the same width.

The width is increased, but the friction is decreased! The sine wave design provides three lips per wheel for superior lateral grip. When you want to slide, they break away smoothly and recover easily.

The wave pattern design allows for a thin contact patch touching the ground and therefore less friction, resulting in a quicker ride.

The alternating pattern of grooves significantly reduces hydroplaning by channeling liquid, sand or gravel out and away from the surface of the wheel, allowing for a firm contact patch with the ground.

Shark Wheel’s wheel design gives it better maneuverability over debris, water and other conditions that deteriorate the performance of conventional wheels.

According to a Future Tech segment in the Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet series, the thinner contact patch from the three strips gave a faster ride, less rolling resistance while cutting a path through dirt, sand and water which also reduces hydroplaning (as opposed to traditional skateboard wheels which "steamroll" over obstacles).
